Britam Introduces Innovative Child-only Medical Cover

Britam Introduces Innovative Child-only Medical Cover

  • Dubbed Milele Junior, the insurance policy provides healthcare protection for children aged between 37 weeks and 18 years.
  • The health plan eliminates the need for parents or guardians to take up a family package policy so as to insure their dependants.

Nairobi, 25th September 2023…Britam General Insurance has unveiled a health insurance package dubbed Milele Junior designed exclusively for children aged between 37 weeks and 18 years.

The launch of the medical cover addresses the pressing need for child-focused health insurance solutions in Kenya.

Data from the Kenya Demographic Health Survey (KDHS) 2022 shows that only 20.85 percent of children below 15 years have health insurance, highlighting the gap that Britam aims to bridge.

“The launch of Milele Junior represents our commitment to ensuring that children have access to the best healthcare services from infancy to adulthood," said Jackson Theuri, CEO and Principal Officer of Britam General Insurance.

"We understand the importance of securing the health and well-being of our children, and Milele Junior is a testament to that commitment. It's a standalone health cover designed with the specific needs of children in mind," he added.

In most cases, children (under 18 years old as defined by the government) access health insurance through family packages taken by their parents or guardians.

Milele Junior bridges this gap by offering a child-only health plan for households without such packages ensuring that no child is left uninsured.

Health insurance uptake among the economically active population remains relatively low in Kenya, with only 28.7 percent of those between 15 and 49 years having health cover.

Milele Junior seeks to improve these statistics by providing affordable and tailored insurance options for children.

The new medical cover, is a comprehensive medical cover which includes inpatient, outpatient, dental and optical benefits. It offers parents and guardians the opportunity to provide a standalone health cover for their children.

Milele Junior includes a wide range of benefits, such as coverage for bed and lodging charges, vaccines, pre-existing, chronic, and congenital conditions, doctors' fees, diagnostics, COVID-19 coverage, and prescribed drugs.

The cover ensures that every child's health needs are taken care of until they reach the age of 18, at which point they can seamlessly transition to Britam's main Milele health cover with minimal requirements.

The coverage is available in four variants, each designed to cater to different levels of healthcare requirements for children. Milele Junior Advantage provides coverage up to the full inpatient limit for pre-existing illnesses, and chronic, and congenital conditions. It also provides access to all hospitals, physicians and healthcare providers on the Britam panel.

Milele Junior Premier is the second option, which is similar to Milele Junior Advantage, however it has a sub-limit structure for pre-existing illnesses, and chronic, and congenital conditions. It provides access to all hospitals, physicians and healthcare providers on the Britam panel.

The third option is Milele Junior Essential 1, which is designed for cost-conscious clients seeking medical insurance and last-expense cover. It is similar to the premier variant, with the main difference being access to a wide range of medium and low-cost hospitals within the Britam panel.

Lastly, there is Milele Junior Essential 2 which also targets cost-conscious clients seeking medical insurance and last expense cover and offers access to a wide range of mission and referral hospitals on the Britam panel.
